OpenAI said on August 31 that ChatGPT's advertising business has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, roughly 200 days after the company began testing ads inside the chatbot. Key facts
- $1 billion annualized revenue run rate reached in about 200 days, per OpenAI's own announcement.
- Self-service Ads Manager access is now expanding to India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

How the ad platform works
OpenAI's advertiser tools include cost-per-click and outcome-optimized bidding, a Pixel and Conversions API for tracking results, product feeds, and custom audience targeting. The company cites two examples in its announcement: an e-commerce advertiser that reported a 3x return on ad spend across campaigns over 28 days, and a technology partner that said more than 80% of ad-driven ChatGPT traffic came from new customers.
“Ads are distinctly marked and do not affect ChatGPT's responses. Advertisers are not given access to users' private conversations.”
Context: a fast-growing revenue line
The ad expansion comes months after OpenAI closed a funding round, announced in March 2026, that brought in $122 billion in committed capital at an $852 billion post-money valuation, led by investors including Amazon, Nvidia and SoftBank alongside continued participation from Microsoft. OpenAI has not said what its ad business's actual (non-annualized) revenue has been to date.
