Review methodology

How a product becomes a recommendation.

Selection

We choose categories by reader relevance and purchase frequency, not by affiliate commission rates. Within a category, the comparison set is defined before testing begins and published with the review.

Acquisition

We buy test units at retail wherever practical. Where a manufacturer supplies a unit, we say so in the review, we accept no conditions on coverage, and we do not provide advance sight of our conclusions.

Scoring

Scores follow the written criteria for the category and are set by the desk. We publish the criteria alongside the score so a reader can weight them differently if their priorities differ from the median buyer's.

Re-testing

Recommendations are revisited when a product is superseded, when a significant firmware or service change alters behaviour, or when reader reports suggest a reliability problem we did not observe.
