Marvel's Wolverine Launches on PS5 to a Mixed Critical Reception

Insomniac's follow-up to its Spider-Man games arrived Tuesday at $69.99. Early reviews praise the combat feel but say the story and 15-to-20-hour campaign fall short of the studio's own bar.

The short answer

  • Marvel's Wolverine launched exclusively on PS5 September 15 at $69.99 for the standard edition and $79.99 for the Digital Deluxe edition.
  • Developed by Insomniac Games with Marvel Games and Sony, it's a single-player, non-open-world action-adventure following Logan three years after leaving Team X.
  • Early scores sit at 78/100 on Metacritic (110 critics) and 80/100 on OpenCritic; reviewers praised the combat feel but said the 15-to-20-hour campaign and story fall short of Insomniac's Spider-Man games.
  • Meridians has not played the game and is not reviewing it; this is a summary of the launch and first-wave critical reception.

Marvel's Wolverine launched exclusively on PS5 Tuesday, Insomniac Games' next superhero title after its two Spider-Man games. Meridians has not played it. Here's what's in the box and what the first wave of reviews says.

What you get

  • Platform: PS5 and PS5 Pro (with PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution support); not available on other systems.
  • Standard Edition: $69.99. Digital Deluxe Edition: $79.99, adding five exclusive suits, five exclusive claws and four technique points.
  • Single-player, narrative-driven, non-open-world. Rated Mature by the ESRB.

The story

The game follows Logan rejoining Team X three years after leaving it, confronting the antagonist Bolivar Trask as he kidnaps mutants across locations including Canada, Japan and Madripoor.

What critics are saying

Metacritic lists an average of 78 out of 100 across 110 critics; OpenCritic has it at 80. Scores split roughly in half: IGN, GameSpot, GamesRadar+ and VGC gave it 6/10, and Giant Bomb 5/10, while Push Square, Destructoid, DualShockers and Game Informer scored it 8/10 or higher. Reviewers consistently praised the melee combat as authentic and the character performances as strong. The most common criticism: the combat toolkit and level design feel narrow next to Insomniac's Spider-Man games, and the story reads as underwhelming to several mainstream outlets over a 15-to-20-hour campaign.
