Goal Zero is recalling about 46,200 of its flagship YETI 3000X portable power stations after finding that the unit's circuit board can overheat, posing fire and burn risks. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall on August 20, 2026, under recall number 26-712. Unlike most hardware recalls, the fix doesn't require shipping the unit back or an in-person repair — it's a firmware update owners install themselves.

What triggered the recall

According to the CPSC notice, the power station's circuit board can overheat, creating a fire and burn hazard. Goal Zero says it has received four reports of units overheating or smoking. No injuries have been reported to date. Neither the CPSC nor Goal Zero has published a technical explanation of what causes the overheating.

  • Sold May 2020 through August 2025 at REI stores, Costco.com, Backcountry.com, Goalzero.com and other retailers, at about $3,000 each

The fix: a firmware update, not a return

Goal Zero's remedy is a free over-the-air firmware update to version 1.9.5, installed through the Goal Zero mobile app under Settings > Firmware Update over Wi-Fi. The CPSC notice tells owners to stop using their power station immediately and install the update before resuming use.

  1. Check whether your unit is a YETI 3000X, SKU 36400
  2. Stop using the power station until the update is installed
  3. Open the Goal Zero app, go to Settings > Firmware Update, and install version 1.9.5 over Wi-Fi
