American Airlines Redirected Elite Upgrades to Premium Economy on 9 Domestic Routes

- The affected routes are JFK-LAX, JFK-SFO and BOS-LAX, plus flights between DFW, PHX and ORD and three Hawaii airports (Honolulu, Kona, Maui).
- Travelers who already bought a Premium Economy ticket, or paid for an Instant Upgrade to Premium Economy, remain eligible for a complimentary bump to Business Class.
- American says the change reflects its expanding Premium Economy cabin footprint on domestic aircraft; Systemwide Upgrades and the elite-tier priority order are unchanged.
American Airlines changed how complimentary upgrades work on nine of its most premium-heavy domestic routes, effective August 25. AAdvantage elite members flying Main Cabin on those routes are now automatically placed on the waitlist for Premium Economy, not Business Class, which had been the default before.
What changed
Previously, elite members booked in coach on these routes went straight onto the Business Class upgrade list. Now they're waitlisted for Premium Economy instead. American's official AAdvantage update states it plainly: "Starting Aug. 25, 2026, status members in the Main Cabin will upgrade to Premium Economy on select flights to / from Hawaii and select transcontinental routes, when eligible seats are available."
The nine affected routes
- New York JFK to/from Los Angeles
- New York JFK to/from San Francisco
- Boston to/from Los Angeles
- Dallas-Fort Worth to/from Honolulu
- Dallas-Fort Worth to/from Kona
- Dallas-Fort Worth to/from Maui
- Phoenix to/from Honolulu
- Chicago O'Hare to/from Honolulu
- Chicago O'Hare to/from Maui
Who still gets bumped straight to Business
The old rule still applies in two cases: passengers who purchased a Premium Economy ticket outright, or who bought an Instant Upgrade into Premium Economy, remain eligible for a complimentary upgrade to Business Class. American also says Systemwide Upgrades and its elite-tier priority order — Executive Platinum and Platinum Pro first, then Platinum, then Gold — are unchanged. Older A321T aircraft that don't have a Premium Economy cabin still allow the direct coach-to-business upgrade.
