The short answer

  • Apple Music is making "Made With AI" transparency tags mandatory for any track "materially generated using AI," upgrading a labeling system that had been optional since March 2026.
  • Apple has not given an exact launch date for enforcement, saying only that mandatory tagging begins "later this year."
  • Apple Music VP Oliver Schusser said in April 2026 that more than a third of monthly uploads were 100% AI-generated, though such tracks made up less than 0.5% of actual listening.
  • Apple redistributed royalties tied to roughly 2 billion streams in 2025 after determining the plays had been artificially manipulated.

Apple Music is turning an optional AI disclosure system into a requirement. Starting later this year, distributors will have to mark any track that was "materially generated using AI" with a "Made With AI" label visible to listeners — a shift from the voluntary tagging Apple introduced in March 2026.

How the labeling actually works

Apple relies primarily on content providers to disclose when a track is AI-generated, backed by an in-house detection system the company uses to catch undisclosed cases. Apple defines AI-platform-generated content as material "primarily derived from a generative AI service." The company hasn't detailed what enforcement looks like for distributors who don't comply, or published a specific date beyond "later this year."

Why Apple is acting now

The volume of AI-generated music on the platform has grown fast. Apple Music VP Oliver Schusser said in April 2026 that more than a third of monthly track uploads were 100% AI-generated — though those tracks accounted for less than 0.5% of actual listening time, suggesting most AI uploads aren't reaching real audiences. Apple has also had to deal with manipulated streaming: in 2025 the company redistributed royalties connected to roughly 2 billion streams it determined had been artificially inflated.

How this compares to other platforms

Apple's move follows similar steps elsewhere in the industry. Deezer says it detects around 60,000 AI-generated songs uploaded per day. Spotify is introducing its own "AI Persona" badges on artist profiles starting in mid-September 2026, with an appeals process for artists who dispute the label.
